The Mission Field Next Door

On the Saturday of the fifth week of Snow Camp, I was standing talking with a visitor by the “Hungary Tube Hill”. He is a student at Northeastern University in Vermont, but is from Michigan where, as he said, it is a ‘miniature Bible Belt’. Coming east, he experienced a culture shock. Out there, pretty much everyone had heard the name Jesus. Here, most people do not even know the name. He shared some statistics he found when he researched the subject. The U.S. is the third most unreached area of the world. 36 counties in New England are unreached areas. Shockingly, only 5 out of the 15 churches in his area preach the Gospel. It really shocked me and made me realize what a great mission field we live in. It also made me sad because considering our country’s roots, one would think this would be a “Christian” country. Definitely not so!
Even though it is sad, I hope this story helps others see the great need for spiritual leaders of our generation to step up and step out and make a difference.
